Scheherazade
The print is a “giclée” (a fine art print from a digital source) of a wood cut block carving in the form of a pseudo “Bas Relief”. A shallow cut carving, a technique usually reserved for wood and stone door and wall panels.
The piece was inspired by a suite of music created by the Russian composer Rimsky Korsakov titled “SCHEHERAZADE”, who was a mythical Queen of the “One thousand and One Arabian Nights”, a collection of folk tales and other stories. She was the most beguiling of story tellers that captured the long term interests of a very powerful King and became his last wife. I wanted to create an exotic graphic image (Icon) of Scheherazade that the story and the music projected. Russian composer + Arabian folklore + Scheherazade story = My Scheherazade. Actual image size 10”x10”
Snow Birds
The print is a “giclée” (a fine art print from a digital source) of a wood cut print on rice paper. I wanted to capture the starkness of birds foraging in a bleak winter setting. The work is a blending of my respect for Asian wood cut style and technique and the “Bauhaus” school of graphic art design which is well known for its bold form. Actual image size: 10”x23”
John Steinbeck
The print is a “giclée” (a fine art print from a digital source) of a wood cut print and archive photo. Once I decided to a series of prints for my Authors Gallery, John Steinbeck had to be the first member. The Grapes of Wrath, a novel so powerful that it remains among the archetypes of American culture. In reading his works you are always inside the story, with all senses on full alert to message and meaning of serious subjects with no compromise intended. Actual image size: 8”x14”
Philly Scape
The print is a “giclée” (a fine art print from a digital source) of an original silk screen print. The image is a consolidated remembrance of all of the roof top scenes and hours spent as a youth while traveling on the rails of the Philadelphia elevated train system. Actual image size: 5”x7”
